Plastic coated coat hanger v 1974 Leyland P76 anti-theft technology

Yes I am an idiot who realises in that 'ohnosecond' (the time between realising you have made an error, and the error occurring) that I have locked the keys in my 1974 Leyland P76 Super V8. The ohnosecond occurring as the car door slams shut and I see the keys in the ignition, instead of my pocket.

How to get them out? After looking at various methods, I decided to use a plastic coated coat hanger and bent it into this shape so I could latch onto the interior door lock and jiggle it up. A complete success. I figured that a wire coat hanger might scratch the paint, so I went with a slightly thicker plastic coated wire hanger. It took about ten minutes and I was closely observed by the postman, several people walking dogs, people driving past etc.

Yes, the car has an immobiliser.

Honesty and humour in advertising - an advertisement for a Leyland P76

The Canberra and District Leyland P76 Owners Club President Alex Shoebridge sold one of his Leyland P76's in December 2012. It's OK, he has more (hidden away on a farm where they may in fact be breeding). How nice is this car? I would have bought it if I had any room to store it (I don't, I have 5 cars and a bus already - including three Leyland P76's). Some detailing and it would be a car show winner. Its an amazing car.

It came to Canberra via a very unusual journey. A country NSW car since new, it was part of a deceased estate not advertised very widely A Canberra based Rover enthusiast bought the car to take the engine and transmission for his Rover 3500. He then contacted the club asking if anyone wanted a shell, very cheaply. Alex bought the shell. About a year later, the Rover gentleman contacted the club seeing if anyone wanted a P76 engine and transmission. He had run out of desire and time for his planned project. Alex reunited the engine and trans with the car and then spent time on and off repairing very minor age related issues. It has had some minor rust repairs and paint respraying, but really - its largely original

Marques in the Park 2011

Marques in the Park is an annual car show in Canberra that is probably my favourite to attend. It is very casual, and is really aimed at car owners not the general public. There is no entry fee, and no parking for non-participants. So, if you are there, its likely you own one of the cars on display.

For some reason the other blokes from the P76 Club decided to not park in the space we had been allocated, and didn't bother to tell me. I decided to not park my car in the shady tree area near the lakes edge, and parked out in the middle of the grassed area. Later, the other P76's were moved to a better spot, but I was off taking foters by then. Enjoy.
